The 28th Alliance Française French Film Festival opens on Wednesday with two very special screenings of The Odyssey, a mesmerising, underwater tale of Jacques Cousteau’s innovative discoveries starring Audrey Tautou.

Jérôme Salle’s dazzling biopic, which follows the chaotic life of celebrity oceanographer Jacques Cousteau - one rich in accomplishments, yet teeming with turmoil – will screen at Cinema Paradiso and Luna on SX, Fremantle, marking the opening of the three week feast of French film. After the screening at Paradiso, audiences are invited to Connections Nightclub for an evening of underwater themed entertainment, drinks and delicious French fayre. Luna on SX audiences can enjoy a drink and sweet treat upon arrival prior to the screening.

The Odyssey takes us back to 1943 when the eccentrically ambitious naval officer Cousteau (Lambert Wilson) dreams of adventure. His magnificent new invention of the Aqua-Lung promises to bring him just that. Newly armed with the ability to breathe underwater for long periods of time, Cousteau dedicates his life’s work to his obsession with the sea, becoming the first to create underwater films that dazzle audiences worldwide. His success comes at a cost, however, as his wife Simone (Tautou) and sons Philippe (Pierre Niney) and Jean-Michel (Benjamin Lavernhe) struggle to keep up with the stormy seas of Cousteau’s fierce and unfailing determination, the ultimate price of which is yet to come.

The 28th Alliance French Film Festival runs from 15 March to 5 April at Cinema Paradiso, Windsor Cinema and Luna on SX and features a host of dramas, thrillers, romantic comedies, documentaries and haunting stories of bygone years

The festival is held by the Alliance Française in association with the Embassy of France in Australia and the support of esteemed, principal sponsor Renault Australia. It is supported in Perth by The West Australian.
